Weather Closure Policy

This policy lays out the procedure and considerations for the closure of the library during weather events. The main consideration is the safety of library staff and library visitors.

In the event of inclement weather or other condition, the Library Director will follow the school system in deciding to close the Library. When the schools close, the library will close. This consistency across departments allows for straightforward communication to the public and clear expectations.

The Library is, however, unlike any other Town Department and open from the morning until 8 pm and on Saturdays. There are times when the Library will be affected, and the school will not. In those situations, the Library Director, in consultation with the Department of Public Works and Facilities Department, if possible, will decide when to close the Library or delay its opening. Factors including road conditions, whether the Library facilities and grounds are free of safety hazards, and others will be considered in making that decision.

The Town Manager may also decide to close all town offices due to weather, and in that case, the Library will be closed.

If weather conditions are severe, the Library will not open.

Once a decision is made it is communicated to the Trustees’ chair, the Town Manager, the DPW, the school Superintendent and staff. Announcements about the closure will also be communicated on our website and social media accounts.
